Zeeman effect

This applet illustrates the Zeeman splitting between two levels of cadmium. This is a Java Applet created using GeoGebra from - it looks like you don't have Java installed, please go to

  1. I use GeoGebra too. Moreover I have made several science tools to work with in my studies and I am very pleased with the software's abilities. How did you construct the Zeeman splitting apparatus? I would be interested in knowing. Ever thought about including an electromagnetic field? Or adding doublets for more intricate splitting?

    1. Hello MuckrakerW.

The construction of the applet was pretty simple: GeoGebra simply shows the results in a fancy graphical way. All the underlying theory has been worked by hand, with the help of Bransden and Joachain's Physics of atoms and molecules.

So, adding more fields would require a total reconstruction of the whole applet.

  2. Thanks for the information.
